When to Paint Your House Exterior in Colorado (Best Months, Worst Months)
The Colorado exterior painting season is real but not what most homeowners assume. Here's when to book, when to paint, and when to wait.
Modern acrylic exterior paints cure between 35°F and 90°F, but 'cures' and 'cures properly' are different. The Colorado exterior season has a real start and end — and the best weeks book up 6–10 months in advance.
1. The Colorado exterior painting window
Practical season for Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, and Longmont: April 15 through October 25.
Practical season above 6,000 ft (Estes Park, Red Feather, Bellvue foothills): May 20 through October 5.
The controlling factor is overnight low temperature. Modern paints need 35°F minimum for 48 hours after application. From November through mid-March, most overnight lows fall below that in Northern Colorado.
2. Best months, ranked
1. September — stable temps, low humidity, low afternoon thunderstorm risk, long dry stretches. Our best-cure month.
2. June — long dry stretches before monsoon season, warm nights, fast cure.
3. May — warming trend, minimal storms in most years.
4. October (first three weeks) — cool but stable, low bug activity, great cure conditions above freezing.
5. April (second half) — variable but workable. Book with a weather-flex contract.
6. July and August — technically fine but afternoon monsoon storms compress the productive window each day.
3. Weeks and conditions to avoid
Any 48-hour window where overnight lows drop below 35°F.
Direct application in full afternoon sun on a south-facing wall in July — the paint flashes off before it can level. Reputable crews rotate elevations to chase shade.
The 24 hours before a known rain event. Modern paints are rain-safe in 2–4 hours but the risk isn't worth it.
Windy days above 20 mph if you want a clean spray finish and non-lawn-colored siding.
4. How far ahead you actually need to book
For September (best month), book by February. Our September calendar closes by Memorial Day most years.
For June, book by January.
For October, book by July.
Interior work fills the November–March calendar and is much easier to schedule 3–6 weeks out.
If you're calling in July for an August exterior slot, you'll get quotes from contractors who have holes in their calendar — worth asking why.
Frequently asked questions
Rarely, and only on sheltered south-facing walls during unusual warm stretches. We don't warranty exterior work applied between November 15 and March 15 because cure conditions can't be guaranteed.
Not if you're 2+ hours past application with a quality acrylic. Rain within the first hour can cause surfactant leaching (streaky residue). It washes off but looks alarming.
