2. When cabinet painting is the right call
You like the layout and the boxes are in solid shape (no water damage, no delamination).
The doors are solid wood, MDF, or high-quality thermofoil in good condition — not peeling laminate.
You want a color change (oak → white, cherry → charcoal, honey maple → sage green) more than a layout change.
Budget is $4k–$8k, not $25k+.
This is 80% of the calls we take. Painted cabinets with SW Emerald Urethane Enamel, sprayed in-shop, are indistinguishable from new painted cabinets at half the cost of refacing.
3. When to reface instead
The door style itself is dated (arched raised-panel from 1998) and you want a Shaker or slab profile — new doors are the fastest way there.
The boxes are structurally fine but the doors have peeling laminate or warped MDF that can't be sanded flat.
Refacing costs about 2x painting and gives you 90% of the visual result of replacement without moving plumbing or countertops.
4. When to replace
The layout doesn't work — you want an island, a wall removed, or a totally different footprint.
The boxes are particleboard from the 80s and starting to sag under granite.
Water damage under a sink cabinet has spread.
You're doing a full kitchen renovation anyway, and it makes sense to pull everything at once.
5. What a real cabinet paint job looks like
Day 1: label and remove every door and drawer front. Remove hinges and hardware. Transport to spray shop.
Days 2–3 (in shop): clean with denatured alcohol, sand every surface, spot-fill dings, spray one coat of bonding primer (SW Extreme Bond or BIN), sand, spray two coats of SW Emerald Urethane Enamel with proper flash time between coats. HVLP spray for a finish that levels flat with no brush marks.
Days 3–4 (on site): mask the entire kitchen, clean and sand the boxes and face frames, prime, and spray on site with a portable containment.
Day 5–6: reinstall doors, drawers, and hardware. Install new bumpers and soft-close if requested.
In-shop spraying is what separates a 10-year cabinet job from a 2-year one. If a bidder is brushing cabinets in place with wall paint, the finish will not last.
