Best Exterior Paint for Colorado's Climate (What Actually Survives 5,000 ft of UV)
At 5,000 ft, UV breaks paint binders 30% faster than sea level. The products that survive Colorado are a shorter list than the paint store aisle suggests.
There is no shortage of exterior paint options at any Fort Collins paint store. There is a very short list of products that actually last 8+ years at 5,000 ft with 300 sunny days a year, 60°F temperature swings, and occasional 1-inch hail. We've tested most of them the hard way — by warranting the results.
1. Why Colorado is harder on paint than almost anywhere
UV index. Fort Collins routinely hits UV 9–11 in summer. UV breaks the acrylic resin binders in exterior paint; the pigment stays but the binder fails, which is what chalking is. Cheap 100% acrylics chalk visibly in 3 years here vs. 6–7 at sea level.
Freeze-thaw. It's normal to see a 40°F swing in 12 hours in shoulder seasons. Paint that isn't flexible enough cracks at the caulk lines and the siding seams.
Dry humidity. Great for cure. Rough on caulk. Every acrylic caulk we use is Sherwin-Williams Shermax or OSI Quad — both stay flexible in dry cold.
Hail. Not a paint problem so much as a substrate problem, but it's worth knowing that hail impacts break the paint film locally and let moisture in. Post-hail touch-ups are part of the Colorado exterior calendar.
2. The four products we actually spec
Sherwin-Williams Emerald Exterior — our default on Fort Collins and Estes Park homes above 5,000 ft. Self-priming on properly prepped surfaces, best UV-resistance we've measured in the field, 10+ years of clean color hold.
Sherwin-Williams Duration Exterior — the workhorse for Loveland, Windsor, Greeley, and Longmont. Slightly cheaper than Emerald, still excellent film, 8–10 year life.
Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior — comparable to Emerald; we use it when a client specifies BM colors and wants a flat sheen that doesn't chalk.
Sherwin-Williams Loxon XP — masonry and stucco only. Elastomeric, bridges hairline stucco cracks, breathable.
3. What we won't put on a Fort Collins exterior
SW A-100 or ProMar 200 exterior — builder-grade lines. Fine for a rental in Kansas; fails in 3–4 years here.
Behr Marquee — big-box product with an inconsistent field record at altitude. The finish looks great year one; the chalking we see year four is not competitive with Duration.
Any 'paint and primer in one' from a big-box store applied over failing paint. The 'primer' claim assumes a sound substrate. Real prep is not optional in Colorado.
4. Product picks by siding type
LP SmartSide and Hardie board: SW Duration or Emerald, two coats, spray-and-back-roll.
Cedar (shake or lap): SW Emerald, always. Cedar's tannins bleed through cheaper products.
Stucco or masonry: Loxon XP body, Emerald or Duration on trim.
T1-11 and older engineered wood: full prime with SW Extreme Bond, then two coats of Emerald.
Painted brick: not our first recommendation, but if committed, Loxon Concrete & Masonry primer then Duration.
5. Sheen selection for Colorado exteriors
Body: flat or low-sheen. Higher sheens telegraph every siding imperfection under our harsh sun angles.
Trim: satin. Enough sheen to look crisp, not enough to flash.
Doors: satin or semi-gloss depending on the look. Semi-gloss shows every brush mark — spray if you can.
Never use high-gloss on any large exterior surface at altitude. The sun angle makes it look uneven from the street.

Above 5,200 ft (Fort Collins west side, Estes Park, Bellvue) — yes, absolutely. Below that (Loveland, Windsor, Greeley), Duration performs comparably for 20% less.
Spray and back-roll on body — spray applies uniform mil thickness, back-roll pushes it into the substrate. Brush cut-ins on all trim.
